  A battery transport case is a certified hard-shell case specially designed for the safe transport and storage of lithium-ion and LiPo batteries. Lithium batteries are classified as dangerous goods, as damaged or short-circuited cells can generate uncontrolled heat — a process known as thermal runaway. A suitable transport case protects batteries from mechanical damage, short circuits and pressure changes, reliably minimising this risk.

• Which batteries may be transported in a UN4H2-certified case?

  The UN4H2-certified models in the TOMcase XTREME Series are approved for the transport of lithium-ion batteries (UN 3480/3481) and lithium metal batteries (UN 3490/3491). This includes LiPo batteries for drones, camera batteries, power tool battery packs and other standard lithium batteries. For specific commercial applications, we recommend clarifying the exact requirements with the relevant dangerous goods officer.

• Do I need a certified case — or is a standard hard-shell case sufficient?

  For private use — such as transporting drone batteries in a car or while travelling — a certified case is not strictly required, but it is significantly safer than an unprotected solution. For the commercial transport of lithium batteries as dangerous goods, however, suitable certified packaging is legally required in many cases. Anyone who wants to be on the safe side — privately or commercially — should choose the UN4H2-certified model.

• Can I transport lithium batteries on a plane — and what does the certification sticker do for me?

  Whether and how many lithium batteries may be carried as hand luggage or checked baggage depends on the current regulations of the respective airline and the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations. The rules vary depending on the capacity of the batteries (Wh) and quantity — please check with your airline directly before your flight. What the included certification sticker provides: it is applied directly to the case and shows at a glance that the case meets UN requirements for the transport of lithium batteries. This creates clarity for flight staff, security checkpoints and logistics partners — and can make the decisive difference when it matters.

• How do I fit the foam to my batteries?

  All TOMcase XTREME battery transport cases are optionally available with multi-layer pick-n-pluck foam. The pre-perforated foam blocks can be adjusted by hand to exactly fit the dimensions of your batteries — no tools, no effort required. Simply pull out the individual cubes that are in the way of your batteries, and you will have a perfectly fitted recess. For companies with series requirements, we produce CNC-milled inlays on request that are cut to the millimetre to fit your battery models.
