Frequently Asked Questions about Transport Cases
-
The size of the transport case is always determined by your equipment — not the other way around. Measure your device (length × width × height) and add approx. 2–3 cm of clearance on each side. All TOMcase cases are available in three variants: empty, with pick-n-pluck foam, or with a custom-made foam inlay — so you choose not only the size but also the right interior for your equipment. Our Case Finder helps you find the right model based on your dimensions. For drones, cameras and laptops we also offer precision-fitted models — no measuring required. If you are unsure, you can reach us at any time via contact form, by email at info@tomcase.de or by phone at +49 (0)7541 487 68 65.

Both series offer solid protection for your equipment — the difference lies in the level of protection, weight and guarantee. The XTREME Series is made from particularly impact-resistant polypropylene, IP67 certified (dustproof and waterproof to 1m depth) and comes with a lifetime guarantee on the shell and clasps. It is the right choice for tough conditions, professional daily use and valuable equipment. The ECO Series offers solid IP65 protection, is lighter and more affordable — ideal for regular use without extreme requirements. In short: anyone who uses their case daily in outdoor conditions or transports sensitive equipment should choose the XTREME Series. For occasional use under normal conditions, the ECO Series is perfectly sufficient.

IP67 is an international protection class certification: the 6 indicates complete protection against dust, and the 7 indicates waterproofing against temporary submersion to 1m depth for 30 minutes. For most users — photographers, drone pilots, field technicians — IP67 is the sensible standard, as rain, dust and splash water are common in everyday use. The XTREME Series goes even further: all models are additionally certified to STANAG 4280 / DEF STAN 81-41 (NATO military standard), MIL-STD-810 (US military standard for extreme environmental conditions) and ATA300 (air freight standard) — making them suitable for the most demanding professional and authority use cases. Those who use their case exclusively indoors in dry conditions can also opt for an ECO Series model with IP65 — a solid and lighter alternative for everyday use.

Yes, all TOMcase models can be checked in as hold luggage without any issues. All cases are equipped with a fully automatic pressure equalisation valve that prevents pressure differences during ascent from forcing the case open, while continuing to protect against the ingress of water and dust. In addition, all XTREME models are certified to ATA300 — the international standard for air freight packaging — making them particularly suitable for professional use in air transport. All cases also feature reinforced eyelets for padlocks — for flights we recommend special TSA locks, which can be opened by customs without damaging the case. For the transport of lithium batteries — for example for DJI drones — we recommend checking with your airline and the current IATA regulations in advance, as the rules can vary depending on the airline and battery capacity. We are happy to help with any specific questions.

No, no tools or cutting are required. The pick-n-pluck foam — also known as cubed foam or pluck foam — is already pre-perforated and always built up in multiple layers. Simply pull out the individual cubes by hand that are in the way of your equipment, and you will have a perfectly fitted recess in which your device sits securely and protected from impacts. Important to know: the pick-n-pluck foam is optional — every TOMcase case is also available empty if you prefer a different interior or are planning a custom inlay. If you need a particularly precise fit for complex or irregularly shaped devices — for example for camera systems with lots of accessories, measuring equipment or series products — we also offer custom CNC-milled foam inlays as a service. For general questions about the interior or for a quote request, you can reach us at any time via contact form, by email at info@tomcase.de or by phone at +49 (0)7541 487 68 65.

Yes, several TOMcase models in the XTREME Series come with an integrated trolley system — meaning an extendable handle and robust wheels for easy transport at airports, train stations or on uneven terrain. The trolley function is exclusively available in the XTREME Series — ECO models do not have a trolley option. For many models the trolley system is optionally selectable — you can decide directly on the product page whether you want to configure your case with or without a trolley. The trolley models offer the same protection standard as the standard versions — IP67, impact-resistant polypropylene and lifetime guarantee on shell, clasps and trolley system. They are particularly popular with photographers and camera crews who travel with a lot of equipment, as well as technicians who are regularly on the road.

Yes, for companies, manufacturers and anyone who needs a precise fit for their equipment, we produce CNC-milled foam inlays that are cut exactly to the respective device or product — whether camera system, measuring equipment, medical technology or industrial tools. The inlay is inserted into the appropriate TOMcase case and ensures maximum protection without any play. Custom branding of the case is also available on request. Custom inlays can be produced for individual pieces as well as larger series — we are available for private individuals with special requirements just as much as for companies and authorities. Yes, all TOMcase cases are stackable — the impact-resistant polypropylene shell and reinforced corners are designed to distribute weight evenly and prevent deformation. The cases in the XTREME Series are designed for static loads of up to 100 kg, making them particularly suitable for transport in vehicles, on loading areas or in tight cargo spaces. The clasps and hinges are also designed for continuous heavy use. The ECO Series is also stackable, but designed for lower static loads — for normal everyday and travel use this is perfectly sufficient. For special requirements — for example for air freight or vehicle transport under extreme conditions — we are happy to provide advice.
